TRAINING & COACHING

Create a training plan that fits your week

WORKOUTS WIZARDINSIGHT FOR YOUR NEXT STEP ↘

A useful training plan starts with when you can actually use it, rather than a long list of exercises. Recording your choices in advance means less searching and decision-making during a workout.

Start with your diary and one clear starting point

First write down what you want your plan to organise. For example: I want to prepare my gym visits and look back afterwards at what I did. That is more concrete than a collection of separate intentions. Then record which days are usually realistic, how much time you have and where you will train.

Use an ordinary week as your starting point. A plan that only fits an unusually quiet week offers little guidance. Consider travel time and other commitments too. You do not need to fill every spare moment. You are looking for a structure you can assess and adjust.

Give every workout a recognisable structure

For each training session, create an overview with a name, an exercise order and the information you want to record. Use clear names such as Workout A gym or Tuesday home workout. The main thing is knowing later, without doubt, which workout you meant.

  • Record which exercises belong to this session.
  • Record the planned execution using details relevant to your plan.
  • Make room for what you actually completed.
  • Write down practical arrangements, such as available equipment.

An existing plan can help you understand the structure. View the training plans as a starting point, then assess whether the layout fits your situation. An example is not a personal assessment of your capacity or technique.

Agree in advance how to handle changes

Suppose you normally train on Tuesday and Friday, but Friday unexpectedly falls through. First determine what your diary allows. You do not automatically have to squeeze a missed session between other commitments. Record the change so your review reflects reality.

Things can change during a workout too. A machine is occupied, equipment is missing or you want to discuss an exercise with a trainer first. Write down what you changed and why. This lets you distinguish a recurring problem from a one-off exception.

Evaluate your plan’s usefulness

When creating your plan, choose a time to review it. Ask yourself: did it fit my diary, was the order clear, and could I record what I did properly? Make targeted changes to what does not work in practice. If you change everything at once, it becomes harder to recognise which adjustment helped.

In a workout app , you can keep your plan and workout records together. Your preparation then also becomes the basis for your next review.

Example: from diary to two recognisable training sessions

Suppose Tuesday after work and Saturday morning usually fit your diary. Name those appointments Workout A and Workout B. For each, record the location, available time including travel, the plan you open and questions about equipment. This is a scheduling example, not advice on training frequency.

Does work prevent Tuesday’s session? Record that and check whether your alternative truly fits. Do not retrospectively mark Workout A as completed. At the weekly review, you can then distinguish an unclear plan from an impractical time slot. Also check whether you understand your plan’s notation .
