Discuss progress using workout records as a starting point

WORKOUTS WIZARDINSIGHT FOR YOUR NEXT STEP ↘

A useful progress conversation covers what happened, how the client experienced it and what you agree next. Workout records help you choose concrete examples. The data only gains meaning by discussing the context together.

Prepare a few concrete observations

Before the conversation, review which workouts were recorded and which questions or changes recur. Choose a few examples that connect with agreements from the previous conversation. You do not need to read every entry aloud to have a thoughtful discussion.

Distinguish what you see from what you suspect. No record may mean a workout was not done, but also that someone forgot to record it. Formulate an open question before drawing a conclusion. This prevents starting the conversation with an incorrect assumption.

Discuss execution and context first

Ask the client how the plan worked in everyday life. Use a specific workout as an example: what went as expected, where did something change, and which explanation was missing? Leave room for the client’s experience alongside the stored data.

  • Which workout does the client want to discuss?
  • Which deviation needs explaining?
  • Did the schedule fit the available time?
  • Which question about the plan remains?
  • Which agreement from the previous conversation worked or did not work?

A log supports this conversation but does not itself constitute a medical assessment or a complete explanation of a result. Keep conclusions within your professional role and the available information.

Turn the conversation into one clear action

Summarise the main problem and discuss the next step. This could be a plan adjustment, extra exercise guidance or an easier recording method. Name who performs the action and when you check whether it helped.

For example: the client could not find the exercise variation and kept choosing something else. You agree to check the correct name together and clarify the instructions. This is more concrete than ‘pay closer attention to the plan’ and enables a future review.

Keep the agreement where you can find it

Briefly record the outcome through the agreed process. A good summary describes the topic, chosen action and follow-up time. Do not unnecessarily repeat all personal information from the conversation. The aim is for trainer and client to recognise the same agreement later.
